    Literature, Languages, Writing, and Humanities

Students in the Department of Literature, Languages, Writing, and Humanities are trained in the analytical methods and research skills of professional humanistic scholars, which have outstanding application to any career in the knowledge and information economy. They hone their writing and presentation skills, craft sophisticated arguments, improve their cultural fluency, read with sensitivity and insight, attend closely to language, supply rich layers of context, and adapt quickly to challenging texts and media and new ways of thinking. These are lifelong skills that make for superb teachers, writers, and collaborators.

Welcome. I'm Matthieu Boyd, Chair of the Department of Literature, Languages, Writing and Humanities. And I look forward to meeting you. We are one of the most diverse departments on campus. We will teach you to write at the college level, and beyond will teach you languages. We will read and discuss ethics and philosophy, and literature with you. The Department of Literature, Languages, Writing and Humanities is about the study of language, writing, thinking and culture. We offer majors in literature, which is FDU's answer to the traditional English major, elsewhere, interdisciplinary humanities, and philosophy. We offer minors in languages; Spanish, French, German, Italian, Italian Studies, Japanese Studies, and a wide range of interdisciplinary minors, including African and African American Studies, Arabic language and culture, British studies, Digital Humanities, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Global and Cultural Studies, Latin American Studies, religion and society, Romance languages, and more. We have a graduate certificate in professional and technical writing, and a unique MA in Creative Writing and Literature for educators. We're always developing new majors, new minors, and new courses such as in medical humanities. Many of our students trained to be teachers pairing our majors and courses with FDU's outstanding quest program in teacher preparation. Other students go on to careers in almost anything; corporate communications, marketing, project management, consulting, editing, literary representation, law, software development, and much more. We're also known for a study abroad programs. We have exchange programs with the University of Bergamo in Italy, and the University of Lyon in France, and study abroad opportunities in Chengdu, China and all over the world. FDU's Wroxton campus in England is especially wonderful for those with an interest in dramatic literature, or who wants to double major in theater. You can see Shakespeare performed in Stratford on Avon, and cutting edge plays in London's West End. One of the greatest things about our majors and FDU as a whole is that we want to get to know you, and to work with you to shape the education you want to achieve your goals. If you're in the literature program, your courses will be taught exclusively by full-time faculty. You will not be taught by grad students like at some big research universities or by Professor on a stage 100 feet away. FDU faculty come from all over Europe, Asia, Latin America, and have trained at some of the most distinguished universities on Earth. And we are here at FDU, because we want to teach you. I and the faculty in the Department of Literature, Languages, Writing and Humanities can't wait to meet you. For more information, go to our website. And please don't hesitate to email me at mwboyd-- mwboyd@fdu.edu. We're interested in what interests you. We want to hear about what you're reading, watching and listening to and what's on your mind these days. And to discuss with you how FDU can shape an education that will serve you in your whole life to come.
